Affordable Housing

Affordable Housing lets you purchase a home in your local area at a discounted price. These Affordable Homes are now available from most local authorities.

Do I Qualify for an Affordable Home?

You should qualify for the Affordable Housing Scheme if you are in need of housing and your income satisfies the income test below.

The income test

  • Single income household

If your gross income (before tax) in the last income tax year was 40,000 euro or less you are eligible.

  • Two income household

Multiply the gross income (before tax) of the higher earner in the last income year by 2.5 and add the gross income of the other earner in the last income tax year. if the answer is 100,000 or less you are eligible.

Where do I apply?

When applying for affordable housing, your first step is to approach your local authority. Local authority websites often include useful information. You will be required to submit some documentation with your application. This will usually include:

  • a P60
  • recent payslip
  • identification (passport etc.)

The policy and practice of each local authority with regard to Affordable Housing can differ widely, so contacting your local authority directly to find out its housing supply situation and qualification rules is always a good idea.
